Speaker 1: George Mavrantzas

Summary:

This session introduces the core types of payroll-related tax notices, explains why they are issued, and outlines how to build a practical and proactive compliance process — from intake and document management to resolution, audits, and refund recovery.
Attendees will walk away with actionable knowledge to help protect their organizations, reduce penalties, and confidently manage notices across federal, state, and local agencies.

After attending this session, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the most common categories of tax notices (e.g., agency enrollment, balance due, refund due, amended returns).
  • Understand the differences between federal and state agency processes and response timelines.
  • Establish an effective tax notice response workflow, including intake, triage, routing, and documentation.
  • Prepare for audits by learning what triggers them, what documentation is typically required, and how to proactively prepare.
  • Recognize emerging trends affecting payroll compliance, such as ACA, EEOC, and fringe benefit scrutiny.
  • Track and follow through on refund opportunities and ensure proper resolution closure.
