Topic 1: Accounting Basics - Carrie Hovell

Summary: 

In payroll, a basic understanding of accounting is necessary.  Accounting can be complicated but we will review accounting principles and process.  We will assess the effect of debits and credits on general ledger accounts used in the processing of payroll.  There will be fun tidbits on how to remember when an account has a debit or credit balance.  This is the first step in understanding accounting and how payroll is part of the impact on financial statements.

Topic 2 : Preparing for YE 2021-2022: What You Need to Know for a Successful Year End - Gerard M. Hall, CPP

Summary: 

It’s the most wonderful time of the year in the payroll world—Year End! Do you have the tools, resources, and plan ready to venture through another COVID-laced Year End. Venture this session with Gerard Hall, CPP as he provides the changes for 2022, quirky items that can make your 2021 Year End challenging, and ways to ensure an accurate and well-planned closing of the 2021 books.

Speaker 1: Carrie Hovell

Bio:

Carrie Louise Hovell, CPP is the Payroll Benefits Manager for Infinitive Inc in Ashburn, Virginia.  She also works in Accounting with Accounts Payable, Cash Receipts and Disbursements, developed a cloud-based filing system to take Infinitive paperless.  Currently, she serves as the Vice President of the Virginia Statewide Payroll Conference.  She is the Vice President of the Charles Town West Virginia Chapter (CTWV) and Past President of the Washington Metropolitan Area Chapter (WMAC). She formerly served on the New England Payroll Conference as the Exhibitor Chair. 

Speaker 2: Gerard M. Hall, CPP

Bio:

Gerard Hall, CPP is the Senior Payroll Operations Manager for the Human Capital Management division of CBIZ in Roanoke VA. After spending over fifteen years working with payroll and benefits, Gerard knows the challenges that payroll practitioners face as well as remaining relevant in the ever-changing regulations that surrounds the industry. Gerard serves as an active member of the Southwest VA APA Chapter as well as the Speakers Committee Chair for the Virginia Statewide Payroll Conference. Gerard serves on the Volunteer Hotline, Board of Contributing Writers, Education Grant Committee, and the Social Networking Committee for the American Payroll Association.

Gerard has created a strong network in both the Learning & Development and the payroll arenas. He can be seen in articles and group pages offering advice and answers on the American Payroll Association, Certified Payroll Professionals Facebook Group, and PayTech. In addition to his extensive payroll experience, Gerard has assisted over 250 people in achieving their FPC and CPP designations through his preparation and assessment activities. In 2018, Gerard established the company donned “That Payroll Guy, LLC” focused on educating people on the intricacies of payroll as well as keeping those within the industry relevant of regulation updates/changes.

Gerard holds a Bachelor of Science in HR Management from his beloved alma mater, Virginia Tech.
